How to Get Points in Sorority Recruitment

Joining a sorority has many benefits. If you're enrolling into a large university with thousands of students, it can be more challenging to make friends. Joining a sorority gives you instant sisters and friends right away. Sororities are also known to have a buzzing social scene, and many focus on philanthropic events that provide opportunities to meet others with like-minded interests. But first you must win points in the recruitment process.
  1. Get a Coach

    • There are coaching services available to help college-ready women learn how to amass points in the eyes of sorority recruiters. "The New York Times" covered a story in which a group of women hired Marlea Foster and Pat Grant, local consultants who had successfully coached their own daughters through rush at Auburn University, Furman, and the University of Georgia. These women opened their own business grooming and preparing young women to "wow" sorority recruiters. Taking a few classes from experienced coaches whose pupils find sorority membership will help you win points.

    Be Active

    • During rush week, sororities throw parties and social events and judge prospective members on how they behave and get along with others. It's important you take part in every single activity the sorority puts on, even if you aren't interested in a particular game or event. This will exhibit respect and engagement -- prerequisites for gaining high points from sorority recruiters. Some of the events may bore you, and that's OK; just make sure you put a smile on your face at all time and try to enjoy yourself because your attitude will be on display for all.

    Have Good Grades

    • As sororities were founded on academic excellence, most of them require a certain grade point average. If you're still in high school, use your senior year to really buckle down and nail in some As on your report card. You can also raise your GPA by taking some AP classes. If you're entering college with a GPA that falls below sorority requirements, use your freshman year of college to study hard and get a strong GPA so you can rush a sorority in your sophomore year with the right qualifications. Having good grades will win you points with sororities because, academically, they will view you as a strength rather than a burden.

    Volunteer Work

    • Sororities engage themselves in charities and volunteer work. If you have a year or two before you start college, you may want to research what some of the charities are that various sororities support, and get active in similar work. The Lambda chapter of Theta Chi Epsilon is involved in numerous charitable activities all year long that include knitting hats for premature babies, sewing toy bears for children in the emergency room and making handmade trinkets for Meals on Wheels recipients at senior centers. If you want to join this sorority, you may want to volunteer your time at retirement homes or in a hospital's children's ward.
