Universities that Offer Student Family Housing

Going to college is hard enough without a commute to campus. Many students live on campus just to avoid the commute. When you have a family, it can be much more difficult to find affordable housing on or near campus. There are many universities that offer student family housing. Usually, student family housing is combined with graduate and faculty housing, but some universities offer housing specifically for student couples, parents or adult children who care for their parents.
  1. University of California at Berkeley

    • UC Berkeley offers two student family housing residence halls. The residence halls, University Village and Smyth Fernwald, are open to families of all types. The units range from single bedroom and bath apartments to three-bedroom, two-bathroom townhomes. Because UC Berkeley maintains a waiting list for these residence halls, it encourages students to apply for student family housing as soon as possible, should they be accepted to the university.

    University of Colorado at Boulder

    • Boulder offers more than 800 apartments for student families. The apartments usually include most utilities, have on-site laundry facilities and are located close to campus. Most apartments are available furnished or unfurnished, with the exception of the studio units, which are only available furnished. While Boulder accepts applications from single students who meet certain requirements, student family applications receive preference.

Rental rates include all utilities, as well as telephone and Internet service. Some units come with washers, dryers and central air conditioning. The university bases application priority for two- or three-bedroom homes on the size of the student's family.
