You're going to college to learn, so make sure that you're equipped with the basics such as pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, binders, highlighters, an assignment book and a backpack or messenger bag to carry your books. Don't neglect technology; take a computer, printer, USB cables, flash drive and power strip so you can research and write papers. Basic office supplies such as tape, push pins, sticky tack, scissors, sticky notes, rubber bands, a ruler, markers and a stapler and staples make a more effective workplace.
Bring a pot, plate, bowl, cup, mug and silverware so you at least have the option of cooking. You may choose to bring a hot pot, small fridge and your favorite snacks as well.
Pack your usual toiletries--shampoo, conditioner, soap, make-up, lotion, floss, toothbrush and toothpaste--as well as something to carry them in if you'll be using a shared bath. You'll need a towel set or two, and you may want a bathrobe too. Bring any prescribed medications and over-the-counter remedies you use.
Bring a set or two of extra-long twin sheets as well as blankets, comforters, pillows and an egg crate mattress pad. Choose a small alarm clock and a bedside lamp that has a clamp base so you can hook it directly to the bed frame if you end up stacking your furniture. A small tool kit comes in handy for everything from putting together furniture to hanging pictures. Take a garbage can if none is provided, and bring a bag, basket or pop-up hamper for laundry. Don't forget the laundry detergent, dryer sheets and hangers!
Pack up your clothes and shoes. Then pack the details that will make the room yours: art, plants, note boards, instruments, games or sports equipment.
