Dorm rooms are almost always equipped with a bed, dresser, desk and chair. This means you will need to bring just about anything else you would like to have in your living space. Bring bedding, curtains, area rugs, a reading lamp, pictures and posters, picture hangers that do not require putting holes in the wall, a garbage can, a miniature refrigerator, a microwave and a perhaps safe for valuables. Check with university regulations to ensure you do not bring any prohibited items.
Living in a small space means you have to arrange and store your items in a manner that is extremely organized. Purchase heavy-duty storage bins that can fit under your bed to store seasonal clothing. Bring hangers that will help you maximize dresser space, and a shoe organizer that will maximize closet space. Purchase hooks with adhesive backing to hang towels and robes. Don't forget a laundry basket and a hamper.
Purchase a laptop computer with external storage devices that you can bring to class for note-taking or plug in at the library for late-night study sessions. A Kindle or Nook is another wise investment, allowing students to access almost limitless titles using a fraction of the space. Don't forget a notebook and pens for classes that do not allow computers. Bring a book bag or rolling suitcase for those heavy textbooks.
Most dormitories provide bathroom and shower facilities that are shared by many people. Purchase a shower caddy to hold all of your soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving items, washcloth or loofah, lotion and other hygienic items. Get a pair of shower shoes to protect your feet from unwanted germs. Bring a bathrobe to wear between your dorm room and the shower, as well as several towels.
College may be a lot of work, but there will still be plenty of time for play. If university policy allows, bring a television for your room along with a DVD player and your favorite DVDs. Purchase board games and set up a game night with your friends. Other fun items to bring are cards, sports gear, crafting supplies and assorted art projects.
