College Packing List for Girls

Packing for college, especially for your freshman year, can be overwhelming. Girls naturally have more "stuff" than boys and generally, college-bound freshman pack too many items that never get used. Check to see what will be supplied to you and what is allowed in your dorm. In addition, contact your roommate to avoid bringing duplicate items. The items listed below are essential to a successful year away from home.
  1. Personal Items

    • Sharing a community bathroom means needing a shower caddy to hold your things.

When you are packing your clothes, think about how often you plan to do laundry. If you are going home for the holidays, switch out your summer and winter clothes then. Do not forget to bring hangers. You will need a bathrobe, flip flops and a shower caddy to walk back and forth to the shower. A basic first aid kit including bandages and over-the-counter medicines are important to have on hand. Ear plugs and a book light are essential for sharing a room with someone else.

    Dorm Room Essentials

    • You never know when you will need one of these.

Most dorms were built before the need to accommodate so many electronics. Be sure to bring extension cords, outlet adapters and power strips. A basic tool kit with screwdrivers, pliers and Duct tape will make you the go-to girl on the floor. You will be amazed at how often these items are used. Storage containers and a cork board will help to keep things neat and organized. Cleaning supplies are helpful to keep your room livable. A laundry bag, detergent and rolls of quarters are essential on laundry day.

    Cooking Items

    • Prepare for dorm life by purchasing basic kitchen tools.

Even if you are using the school's meal plan, you will need some basic kitchen items. In addition to a mini fridge and microwave, be sure to bring a can opener, bottle opener and food storage containers. Do not forget microwave-safe bowls, wax paper and disposable forks or spoons. You will need a small bottle of dish soap and a sponge to clean your kitchen supplies. Zip Lock bags and rubber bands are other essential food storage items.

    Comfort Items

    • Although you do not want to pack anything of value, having reminders from home will help to settle you in at school. Bring pictures of your friends and family. Have your mail forwarded from home and get your magazine subscriptions delivered to your dorm. Pack your favorite coffee mug or your lucky hat. Coordinate with your roommate and pick a color scheme for decorations. Girls with cute rooms are typically the most popular in the dorms.
