Packing List for a College Apartment

Going off to college is an exciting time. Sometimes that excitement takes priority over essential planning. If you want your move to college to be smooth and stress free, prepare a packing list well in advance. Make sure that you give yourself ample time to gather items and pack. Don't start packing comfort or entertainment items until after you've packed the essentials.
  1. Kitchen

    • Before making a kitchen packing list, talk with your roommate about what he will be bringing. This prevents double-ups and gives you both an idea of what you consider to be necessities. Many kitchen items can be purchased later as needed, and they are relatively inexpensive, so there is no need to fill your suitcase with a large variety of pots and pans. Pack two of each basic dinnerware item, such as plates, mugs, bowls and utensils. Depending on your apartment's amenities, you may also want to pack a coffee maker, a microwave and a small refrigerator. Don't forget kitchen cleaning supplies and paper towels.

    Bedroom and Living Area

    • Pack two sheet sets including pillowcases and pillows and at least two warm blankets. An alarm clock is important for early starts, although the alarm function on your mobile phone could be sufficient. Also pack a bedside table for storing small personal items. A small bookshelf or desk is helpful for studying and storage. Basic furniture is all you'll need to begin with, such as a sofa or a couple of comfortable chairs. Remember to pack a waste basket, as well as liners, for your bedroom and living area. Laundry detergent and a laundry hamper are also necessary.

    Bathroom

    • Two or three towels, a couple of hand towels and a bathmat should be sufficient, as long as you keep up with your laundry and allow the towels to dry between uses. Pack a bag with all your basic toiletry items such as toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo, any medication you take and other items you use on a daily basis. A small waste basket is helpful for keeping the bathroom tidy. Don't forget cleaning supplies for the bathroom, including a room deodorizer.

    Miscellaneous

    • School supplies are an obvious necessity. A personal computer or laptop, printer, paper, blank CDs, a portable USB drive, pens, a backpack and notebooks are some of the basic essentials. You should also bring a vacuum cleaner with you. Pack entertainment options according to your personal preference, such as a TV, stereo or game console. Other sensible items to include on your packing list are batteries, a small first aid kit, a sewing kit, an emergency contacts list, a flashlight, pain and headache medication, an umbrella, a small fan, storage bins and a lockable box for valuable or important items.
