Identify the annual weather patterns where your school is located. Pack clothes that are appropriate for the weather you will encounter. For instance, if you are in a tropical climate, leave your heavy winter coat at home and take plenty of cool clothes. Take a bathrobe, because most dormitories do not have private bathrooms. Pack a pair of flip-flops or shower shoes. Take a collapsible hamper for laundry. Don't forget your socks, pajamas, underwear and shoes.
Include your school supplies in your packs. It will be less expensive to purchase school supplies at a local department store than at the campus bookstore. Pack pens, pencils, a pencil sharpener and holder, a monthly planner, markers and a whiteboard, sticky notes, reference books and folders. Take a key chain for your keys. Remember a backpack or tote bag for carrying your books and supplies to and from class. Spiral notebooks and binders, dividers and loose leaf paper will be required.
Take all of your toiletries, including shampoo and conditioner, a razor, body wash, shaving cream, toothbrush and toothpaste, dental floss, nail clippers and nail file, brush or comb, deodorant, feminine products, face wash, contact solution, loofah or washcloths and any cosmetics you use. Take or purchase cleaning products, a bathroom mat and shower curtain. Towels should also be packed. Take a blanket or comforter, and a pillow and sheets for an extra-long twin bed. Include a hairdryer, flat iron or curling iron if they are a part of your regular routine.
You can also take a few miscellaneous items, such as an alarm clock, lamp and air freshener. Don't forget your laptop, cellphone and MP3 player, along with their chargers. You can take a refrigerator and electronics, but purchase them locally so you do not have to travel with them. Take one plate, bowl and set of utensils. Also, take your favorite snack foods. Take all your medications and an extra set of contacts or glasses. Under-the-bed storage also comes in handy. Take your purse or wallet and any jewelry you wear, including a watch. Take an extension cord and surge protector. Don't forget your paperwork.
