Underwear is an important part of your wardrobe, and unlike other articles of clothing, it probably shouldn't be worn multiple times. Dorm packing guidelines suggest that students should bring 14 to 21 pairs of underwear, or at least enough to allow them to survive until laundry day.
Athletes should bring wicking athletic socks in addition to their socks intended for casual wear. Bring more socks than you think you'll need. If you're playing sports, you will use one to two pairs of socks per day. If you're planning to hike or backpack during college, bring wool or boot socks.
Casual wear pants and jeans are a staple of any college student's clothing supply. Most colleges don't have dress codes, so you can count on wearing your favorite blue jeans to class every day. Bring a pair of formal wear pants for special occasions such as dinners with professors, concerts and formal parties. Bring five to seven pairs of pants, or enough to last until laundry day.
Pack at least 14 shirts and blouses before heading to college. Make your wardrobe versatile by choosing clothing that can be layered to create several different outfits using the same basic shirts. Make sure to bring shirts that will be appropriate for all needs of your college life--class, formal events and friends.
In the fury of packing for college, make sure to bring clothing that you can relax and unwind in. Bring your favorite pajamas and an old T-shirt to sleep in. Sweatpants and a hoodie create a great attire for unwinding with friends.
Be prepared for the weather in your new college town. Check the weather before packing, or ask current students at your college for tips on what to bring. Make sure to bring a water-proof raincoat and a warm fleece or jacket for winter.
