Before you purchase bedding, find out what size bed you will be given in your dorm. Most beds in dorm rooms are single or twin-long sized. Purchase a mattress pad that can be washed. Buy one or two sets of sheets, pillow cases and a comforter or blankets, depending on your preferences. In addition, purchase several bath towels and washcloths.
Your dorm room will have overhead lights, but you may wish to purchase a desk lamp for your desk -- although some dorm-provided desks have integral lights -- and a smaller bedside lamp as well. Buy a flashlight to keep in your dorm room in case of a power outage. Make certain you get to class on time by purchasing an alarm clock. Dorm rooms may be hot and uncomfortable, so buy a fan for your room. The fans that fit inside your window work well. If you are using bunk beds, you may want to have a smaller fan by your bed to keep you cool at night. If your university allows, bring in a television or game system. Keep a small tool kit on hand for emergencies. Bring along several extension cords and power strips for your dorm room.
If your university allows it, you may want to bring along some kitchen appliances so that you can eat in your dorm room. Buy a small coffee pot, microwave and mini refrigerator -- or find out if the school rents mini fridges by the semester. A toaster is also useful for quick breakfasts. In addition, buy an inexpensive yet sturdy set of dishes and eating utensils. Glasses and mugs are also needed; consider durable plastic rather than glass. You will also need paper towels, dish detergent, a small dish drainer and dish towels for washing and drying your dishes, as well as a small cabinet or container to store your dishes.
If you are using a communal bathroom, you will want to bring a pair of shower shoes and a shower caddy for carrying your toiletries back and forth from the bathroom to your room. Plan to bring a bathrobe as well. Bring along all your toiletry needs, including shampoo and conditioner, soap, razors and deodorant. You will also need a hair dryer and other personal care items.
Dorm rooms are usually quite small and minimally furnished; they require creative storage. Buy plastic tubs with lids that can be easily stacked in your closet or hidden beneath the bed. In addition, purchase a hanging closet organizer, as well as adhesive and over-the-door hooks for storing your backpack, coats and other hanging items. Don't forget to buy plenty of clothes hangers.
A collapsible laundry basket will save space and make carrying laundry simple. You will also want to have cleaning supplies and a small vacuum or broom and dustpan for cleaning your room. Cleaning rags, dusters and a mop and mop bucket may also be needed.
