How to Adjust to College

Entering college as a freshman can be a whirlwind. After all, the difference between life in high school versus college is as dramatic as night and day. With college comes a lot more freedom, new experiences and new people. The adjustment can sometimes be tough. Learn how to make a successful and smooth transition into the world of higher education.

Meet new people. As a freshman, you may feel shy and nervous about connecting with other students. However, it is important to remember that many others are in your same boat and probably don't know a lot of people on campus, either. If you can share your feelings with other people in a similar situation, it may make you feel less lonely and overwhelmed. Don't be afraid to give a quick "hello" to new faces you see, whether in the library, in your dormitory or waiting outside before class.

Concentrate on your studies. With all of the newness of college life, you can easily forget why you're there in the first place -- which is to study and expand your mind. The shock of being around new people, taking new classes and perhaps even living away from home can often lead to academic neglect. Do not allow yourself to get too caught up the social aspects of college. Remember that your main priority is to learn and get on a solid career path.

Take advantage of technology. Many students who live on campus experience homesickness during the first few months (or the first year) of college. The lack of familiarity can be jarring. To combat these tough emotions, keep connected with family and friends back home through technology. Talk to your younger sister face-to-face with a video chat program such as Skype, iChat or Google Voice. Exchange hilarious jokes with your father through text message. Engage in weekly phone sessions with your best friend.

Treat yourself well. College can be really stressful. If you pull too many all-nighters cramming for important exams or writing papers, you may notice it taking a serious toll on your well-being and health. To make sure that you are in optimal condition to succeed at college, be sure to consume healthy meals, get sufficient sleep every night (at least eight hours) and work out regularly.

    • 5

Become active on campus. One way to shine at college is not only to succeed academically but also to join a wide variety of extracurricular activities. Not only will these activities enrich your mind, but they will also help you network and meet new people. Consider joining sports teams such as volleyball or swimming. If you like singing your heart out, sign up for choir. Open yourself up to all of the exciting opportunities that college life can offer you.

Decorate your dorm room. College dorms are often sparse and blandly decorated units. Work on making your room a cheery and motivating space, as you will probably spend a lot of time there studying and working. Adorn your walls with posters of your favorite music acts. Purchase a brightly-colored comforter for your bed spread. Bring some of your favorite childhood stuffed animals from home to give the room a little extra warmth and character. Just make sure you consult with your roommate (if you have one) and RA (resident adviser) if you want to hang something that requires putting holes in the wall.
