How to Make Friends in a College Dorm

Living in a college dorm can be the perfect opportunity to meet people and make new friends. You and your dorm mates will be experiencing the upcoming semester together, so use these tips to get out there and meet the people with whom you are going to share the next 3 to 4 months of your life. Your new best friend could be right around the corner-literally.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce yourself to the people on your floor, or even in your particular hallway. Be proactive about going out and meeting your dorm mates.

    • 2

Attend your dorm's orientation meeting. Start introducing yourself to the people sitting around you.

    • 3

Get involved in dorm-sponsored activities. Volunteer to help coordinate a dorm-wide party or other event to really get involved.

    • 4

Leave your door open when you are in your room as an inviting gesture to passersby.

    • 5

Strike up a conversation in the community bathroom. This may seem like an awkward time to meet people, but take advantage of the few minutes you spend brushing your teeth with the person at the sink next to yours.

    • 6

Bake cookies in the dorm's kitchen, order a pizza or pop a bag of popcorn. Invite your neighbors to come by and share in your culinary offerings.

    • 7

Host a party in your room and invite the people on your floor. Give your party a theme, such as a Hawaiian luau, and present guests with leis or grass skirts as they come in. This will liven things up and get others involved.

    • 8

Join a school club and get involved with campus-wide activities. Use these activities as an opportunity to find something in common with dorm neighbors. If you recognize someone from your dorm at one of these events, go over and say hello. Use it as a conversation piece the next time you pass that person in the hallway in your dorm.
