Collect the grades for each class you have taken per semester or marking period. Look on your semester transcripts to find out the number of semester hours for which each class accounts. Create a chart with space for four category headings that read: "Class," "Semester Hours," "Grade" and "Quality Points." Fill out the first three categories for each class.
Determine the quality points for each class you've completed by translating each letter grade into a number based on the quality point scale (see Tips). Write the quality points next to the corresponding class and grade on your chart.
Multiply the quality points of one class by the number of semester hours the class was worth. For example, if you received an "A" (4.0) in your science class, which was worth three semester hours, your quality points for that class would equal 12. Repeat this step for each class taken.
Add up the quality points for all classes. Add up the total semester hours for all classes. Divide the total number of quality points by the total number of semester hours. If you want your semester GPA you would only use the quality points and semester hours from that desired semester. If you want your cumulative GPA you must use the quality points and semester hours from your first semester to your present semester.
