Ideas for Gifts for Kids at College

When purchasing a gift for a college student there are two things that you should consider--size and functionality. Most college students have a limited amount of space to keep their personal belongings, so any item that provides additional storage options is a good choice. Functional gifts are also excellent choices and often include items that are used on a daily basis.
  1. Necessities Basket

    • Putting together a basket of items that a student may not realize they'll need is a great way to let them know that you really put a lot of thought into their gift. Start with a plastic storage bin and fill it with hangers, extension cords, light bulbs, a first aid kit, a sewing kit, a key chain with a whistle attached (for safety) and an umbrella.

    Memo Board

    • Students often have a lot of things to remember and an erasable memo board will help to keep their life organized. Don't forget to include erasable markers and an eraser. Post-it-notes and magnetic note holders are nice to include as well.

    Dual Alarm Clock

    • An alarm clock that can be set for two different times is a handy gift for college students. Students often have classes that start at different times on certain days of the week. For instance many classes start at a particular time on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and a different time on Tuesday and Thursday. A dual alarm can be set for these two times and does not have to be re-set every day.

    Small Safe

    • College living usually means a lot of people hanging around and very little privacy. A small lockable safe will help ensure that her personal items remain personal and she has a place to store important papers.

    Lap Desk

    • A lap desk or computer tray offers the convenience and comfort of studying and working in bed. Many of the new computer trays include adjustable legs, built in mouse pad and a computer light.

    Storage Bins

    • Dorm rooms are often very small, so stackable storage bins or even baskets that can fit under a bed make great gifts. Consider adding a few small items to each of the baskets, one could hold toothpaste, soap and shampoo, another could hold some snack foods, and another could hold pencils, pens and paper.

    Games

    • A selection of small board games is a great gift for a college student. They can be easily stored and provide hours of entertainment. Pass the Pigs, Farkle, Electronic Guestures and Apples to Apples are great choices and can be played by two people or a large group. Simple playing cards are also a great gift.

    Decorative Items

    • Small decorative items can add a personal tough to a drab dorm room. Some thoughtful items include picture frames, decorative cork-board or a small halogen reading lamp. Large picture frame collages make a great wall decoration, many can hold 20 pictures or more.
