In a dorm, you'll be sharing a shower, so shower shoes are necessary to avoid contracting on any fungus on your feet, such as athlete's foot. You will also need a bathrobe, since you will walk to and from the shower. Don't forget other toiletries such as shampoo, tooth paste, a tooth brush, hair brush and hair drier, makeup, cotton balls, deodorant and mouth wash, and anything other accouterments that you use on a regular basis.
These days, a computer is the modern version of notebooks, paper and pen. They are essential, so don't forget your laptop. You will also want to have an MP3 player to listen to tunes on your way to and from class and while relaxing in your room. You'll also need a cell phone so you can make those calls home when funds are running low.
This is college, not a hotel resort, so you'll need to bring your own bedding. Include pillow cases sheets, blankets and a bedspread or comforter. If you have a favorite pillow from home, bring it. Bring several sets of sheets for back-ups as well.
Don't forget the whole reason you're going to move away--college. You will want to have a sturdy backpack to hold your pens, pencils, laptop, notebooks and textbooks. Purchase plenty of writing utensils along with a highlighter. Other ancillary supplies are helpful as well, such as Post-it notes, a stapler, hole-punch, paperclips and a desk lamp.
You will be doing your own laundry so don't forget a laundry basket or two to hold both clean and dirty clothes. You also want fabric softener, detergent and dryer sheets. You will need to have basic cleaning utensils for your room as well, such as a broom and dust pan and pre-moistened dust rags and antibacterial wipes.
To ease the transition from home, you'll want some items to help personalize your space. Bring some framed pictures of family and friends, posters of your favorite entertainers or sport stars, or awards you may have won in high school. Anything that says, "this is who I am and this is where I'm from," will make it feel like home away from home.
