Sign up for help when you need it. The college you attend wants you to succeed and have a smooth adjustment from home life to life on campus. Schools offer free tutoring sessions, counselors and subject learning sessions. Take advantage of these services to get academic help or to talk to your counselor about your college concerns and struggles.
Join college clubs. Think about what you enjoy -- chess, reality TV, movies, books, art -- and find a club based on your interests. Most campus clubs don't require a membership fee and are guaranteed to help you meet other students with whom you have something in common.
Participate in social activities on campus. At social gatherings that are sponsored by the college, such as dances, movie nights, cook-outs and resident hall meetings, you will have a chance to get noticed and introduce yourself to your peers in a friendly setting.
Communicate regularly with your support system back at home -- a youth pastor, your mom, a sibling or a friend who is willing to talk with you and cheer you on. They look forward to hearing from you and will be a positive influence on your self-esteem as you adjust to college life.
