Make a written schedule. College can be overwhelming, and you may need to spend extra time on homework. Write down the classes you have and the times of the day or evening that you will spend studying for each class. This will keep you on track and help you feel in control.

Learn to relax. Go for long walks or bike rides. The physical activity will help you reduce stress. You can even learn to meditate. Get a book on meditation at the campus library and practice.

    • 3

Join a club or group that piques your interest. Ask your dean's office for a list of clubs and activities on campus. Doing something you enjoy will relax you and you will meet friends who share the same interests as you.

Go to your classes. This may seem like a no-brainer, yet many college freshman end up partying and sleeping late, thus missing class. Don't allow this to happen. You can have fun with friends, but don't let it affect your academic life. If you are struggling in class, that will only add more stress.

Seek the support of family and friends. When you are feeling down or homesick, call your family or old friends. It's OK to admit that you are having a hard time adjusting to college. Those closest to you can give you tips. It's healthy to vent your feelings with someone who cares about and understands you.

Speak to professors or teaching assistants if you feel you need a little help. Don't let yourself fall behind. Don't allow embarrassment to stop you from seeking help. You are there to learn and need to utilize every opportunity to do so. You will feel better about yourself and college in general if you are doing well in your classes.
