Graduate Luncheon Themes

Universities often celebrate the significant milestone of graduation with a luncheon for students, parents, teachers and other school personnel. Create a festive luncheon that is meaningful and memorable by incorporating a fitting theme. The theme can be serious, elegant, fun, or festive, but it should make the graduates feel proud of their accomplishments and ready to look to the future. Incorporate many aspects of the luncheon into the theme, including the decorations, centerpieces, activities, food, cake, tableware and party favors.
  1. Careers

    • Inspire the students with a luncheon theme of future careers. Showcase the different major career paths that the students may take. Place pictures of people in different occupations on the walls, such as teachers, military, and firefighters. Dedicate each table to a field such as science and computers, or to a specific profession. For example, relate one table to health care, and include a centerpiece made of a doctor's stethoscope along with small figures of a doctor and nurse, while placing a gavel and scales on another table to represent the law.

    School Subjects

    • Students learn about many subjects on their way to graduation. On the walls, show pictures of students performing in different classes, such as conducting experiments in a chemistry class and solving math problems. If possible, place photographs of the actual graduates in these classes. Each table can represent a subject. For example, to represent social studies, place a world globe and flags from different countries in the centerpiece, and place items like a microscope and beakers on a table to represent science.

    School Spirit

    • Commemorate the school for the soon-to-be alumni. Decorate the walls with school banners and posters. The tablecloths, tableware, and chair covers should showcase the school colors. In the middle of the table, place school spirit items like pom-poms and shirts with the school name on them — which can then be given away as party favors. Some of the food and garnishes at the luncheon should match school colors, such as tomato soup with a yellow squash garnish for a school with the colors gold and maroon. Make a cake with the school mascot.

    Reach for the Stars

    • "Reach for the stars" presents a fitting analogy for students about to embark on life. Astronomy-related decorations include photographs of celestial bodies, LED lights, and a machine to project stars on the walls. Use navy as the color of the tablecloths with silver confetti for the stars. Use glass orbs for the centerpieces to represent planets. Place motivational quotes on the walls urging the students to reach for their dreams, no matter how high they are.
