Themes for Welcoming Students to School

Whether you're welcoming all your students at the start of a new school year or a new student during the term, strong themes motivate students for success. Students may feel intimidated by transferring to a new school and many students may face a new school year reluctantly after a long, fun summer. Use themes to put students in a better mood and remind them of their goals for the school year. These themes can be represented on T-shirts, posters and bulletin boards.
  1. A New Start

    • A new school or academic year is a chance for a fresh start. Low grades and other disappointments are in the past, and the student can push himself to do better this time. A similar theme is "A Clean Slate," giving the idea that the student is starting anew and can get his grades off to a good start. It also means time to develop new, better study habits, join activities and become an active member in the success of the school.

    Start Your Engines

    • While school is not a race, this phrase symbolizes that it's time to get in gear and begin learning, completing assignments and tests and other activities in school. Placing it near the front of the school reminds students that when they arrive at school, they should get in the learning mindset, ready to focus in class and work hard.

    Start Off Strong

    • Strength is attained through pushing yourself and continual hard work. This is not only true for physical strength, but also mental strength. Thus, "Start Off Strong" motivates students to work hard and push themselves to improve in academics. This theme also has visual components, which can be used on posters and other materials, for example, the image of a bulging bicep or someone lifting heavy weights. To symbolize mental strength, use a picture of a student successfully lifting a large number of textbooks over his head.

    Join The Team

    • While students each earn their own grades, teamwork is an important part of school, both in the classroom and after-school activities and sports. The idea of teamwork is an important message to give to students when welcoming them to school. This reminds them they need to work together and be kind to each other. It also encourages students to get involved and participate in the school to make it a better place.
