Sport Management Graduate School Programs

Students wanting to turn their love of sports into a career can pursue a graduate degree in sport management. These programs introduce them to the theoretical and business sides of sports and allow them to gain valuable experience in the field through internships. Students can often complete these programs in as little as one year, and not all programs require a master's thesis.
  1. California State University

    • Through its Department of Kinesiology, California State University Long Beach offers a Master of Arts in sport management. The program exposes students to sports management theory and practice. Students can complete this 36-credit program in 18 months. Courses include Foundations of Sport Management, Sport Finance, Legal and Ethical Issues in Sport and Facility and Event Planning in Sport. Students also complete a sport management internship where they gain hands-on experience.

    University of Massachusetts

    • Located in Amherst, the University of Massachusetts offers a Master of Science in sport management. Students complete 35 credits to earn the degree, with 29 of those credits in a fall and spring semester. Students can then choose from one of three options for their final six credits---an internship, two sport management electives or a master's thesis. The school helps place students in internships at organizations like college athletic departments, professional sports teams and sports marketing agencies. Ambitious students can complete the degree in one year. Courses include Sport Marketing, College Athletics, Sport Labor Relations and Applied Sport Marketing Research.

    Northern Illinois University

    • Students gain both theoretical and practical skills through a 36-credit sport management class at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. The program prepares students for careers with athletic and sport clubs, college athletic departments and professional sports organizations. Courses include Managing the Sport Enterprise, Sport and the Law, Sport Promotions and Sport Finance. Students can choose from a thesis or non-thesis option; coursework depends on which option they choose. A one- to six-credit internship is also required.
