Masters Programs for School Counselors

School counselors provide educational, personal and career guidance to students in elementary, middle and high school. A master's degree program will teach prospective counselors counseling techniques through classroom learning and a practicum or internship. Graduates are prepared to seek licenses as school counselors.
  1. University of Toledo

    • Students enrolled in the master's degree program at the University of Toledo can complete the 48-credit degree in two years of full-time study. Required courses cover topics such as counseling theories, school psychology and educational research. A practicum gives students experience at a site of their choosing; at least 40 hours of direct counseling service is required for graduation. Graduates are prepared to become licensed school counselors in most states. Applicants need a minimum undergraduate grade-point average of 3.0 and must submit standardized test scores, a personal statement and three letters of recommendation; selected students will be invited to interview before an admissions decision is made.

    Lewis University

    • The 40-credit-hour master's program in school counseling at Lewis University trains students in the assessment and interviewing skills necessary to be a school counselor. Admission is based on a review of undergraduate transcripts, recommendation letters and a personal statement. Core courses in the program cover topics such as psychopathology, interviewing skills and group therapy. Students not already certified as teachers also take classes in classroom management and educational organization for school counselors. All degree candidates are required to complete a practicum and an internship in school guidance.

    Georgia State University

    • Students in the master's degree program at Georgia State University can select concentrations in counseling elementary and middle school students or high school students. The degree requires completion of at least 48 credits, including courses in multicultural education, basic and group counseling skills and ethical standards in counseling. Students also select from courses covering topics such as play therapy and career assessment. Applicants need a minimum GPA of 2.5 and must submit a resume, personal statement and three recommendation letters.
