How to Cite a Paper on a Slide

Proper citation is an important safe guard against plagiarism. Plagiarism is a result of improper paraphrasing or any use of information gathered from a source that is not properly referenced. The copy and paste feature of word processing programs makes it easier than ever to mistakenly claim the words or ideas from another person's paper as your own. Avoid plagiarism in your slide presentation by citing all of the papers you used as sources both in-text parenthetically and in a reference slide.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask your professor or supervisor which style guide is appropriate for your slide presentation topic. Style guides include APA, MLA, and Chicago Style. As a general rule, APA style is used for the social sciences, MLA is used is the humanities, and Chicago Style is used for English.

Insert parenthetical references throughout your slide presentation wherever you used information that would not be considered common knowledge. In-text parenthetical references should include: (Author, Year of Publication).

    • 3

Label a slide at the end of the presentation "References". In alphabetical order, create a citation corresponding to each in-text parenthetical reference. Include: author name, last names first; year of publication, in parentheses; title of article: title of the periodical or journal that the paper appeared in, the volume (italicized) and page number.

    • 4

Read through each of your slides again carefully. make sure that a parenthetical citation appears after each piece of information gathered from research and that every parenthetical citation has a full corresponding reference with enough information for someone reading your slides to find the original source.
