How to Calculate a Credit-Based GPA

Grade point averages (GPAs) are numbers given to students based on their grades. Your GPA is an accumulation of your grades in each class, determined by providing numerical value to each of your letter grades and dividing the total by the number of credit hours you've taken. Grade point averages are representative of your academic progress and standing; the higher your GPA, the better reflection of your academic achievements.

Obtain your grades from each class you have taken. Each of your letter grades must be provided with a numerical value based on the GPA conversion chart. An A is worth 4 points, B is worth 3 points, C is worth 2 points, D is worth 1 point and an F is worth 0 points.

    • 2

Calculate the number of credit hours you are taking in each class. For example, if you have five classes each worth three credit hours; that gives you a total of 15 credit hours.

    • 3

Give value to your letter grades. For example, in your five classes you have an A,B,C,D and F. To calculate your GPA based on credit courses, multiply the numerical value of each of your grades by the number of credit hours that class is worth. In this example, the class you have an "A" in is worth three credit hours. This means you must multiply the four points you receive for your "A" grade by three for a total of 12 points..

Add the numerical values from each class together. Using this example you have a total of 30 points. Divide your 30 points by the number of credit hours you took, which is 15. This gives you a GPA of 2.0.
