How to Cite Advertisements

Advertisements come in various forms and need to be appropriately cited when used in a research paper or essay. You can find a print advertisement from a magazine or newspaper, a web advertisement or a television advertisement such as a commercial. Cite the advertisement in either Modern Language Association format or American Psychological Association format. These two commonly used citation styles have slightly different citation methods for advertisements.

Cite magazine or newspaper advertisements with the author (often the company), the item being advertised, the magazine or newspaper title, the publication date and the page numbers referenced with MLA. Magazine example: Maybelline. "Mascara Advertisement". Seventeen Magazine 13 July 2011: 34. Print.

If citing a newspaper, an example could be: "Cover Girl. "Foundation Advertisement." The Idaho Statesman 8 February 1998: B2. Print."
