Use your list of grades and write down each letter grade (without the plus or minus signs) on a sheet of paper. Next to each of these grades write down the number of hours each class earned. You will not need to write down the hours if this is for determining high school GPA, where all classes are counted equally.
Translate the letter grade to its numeric value. Use the following chart for the translation:
A is equal to 4
B is equal to 3
C is equal to 2
D is equal to 1
F is equal to 0
Write down these numbers on your sheet of paper.
Multiply the numeric grade value of each class by the number of hours each class was worth. For example, receiving a "B" in class that was worth 4 credit hours would give you 12 as your answer. After you've written these numbers down for each class, add them together and record the sum. This number represents your total grade points.
Divide your total grade points by the total number of credit hours attempted. Your answer will be between zero and four. This answer is your grade point average.
Use the above method to determine the total grade points received during your attendance at the school and divide by the total number of credit hours attempted. The final result is your cumulative grade point average.
