How to Design a Title Page Using Harvard Style

Harvard Style is a popular format for research papers because it incorporates references to sources of information right into the text of the paper while also including a comprehensive bibliography at the end of the research paper. Many professors like to use Harvard Style because it is simple, but has a more professional feel than more casual styles like MLA or APA. Harvard style requires certain information to be included on the title page of your term paper in order to conform to Harvard Style. These requirements are easy to meet and make your paper look crisp and professional, making a good impression before a reader even encounters the first word.

  1. How to Design a Title Page Using Harvard Style

    • 1

Center the text on your title page. All of the information on the title page will be centered, so it is easiest to simply format the whole page in this manner. Then you can simply type the information into your document and it will appear in the middle of each line.

    • 2

Place the title of your project all in capital letters about 1/4 of the way down the page. You will probably need to hit the return key 3 or 4 times to reach this point. It may help to reduce your view of the page to about 50% so that you can see the entire layout of the page at once. If your title is "Romancing Memory: Hamlet's Sad Misconception of Ophelia," then it will look like this:ROMANCING MEMORY: HAMLET'S SAD MISCONCEPTION OF OPHELIA

    • 3

Place the words "by" and your own name on separate lines 3 lines below the title. Your name should be centered in the exact middle of the page, so arrange your spacing to reflect that requirement. If your name is Bethany Stibbens, then your title page will now look like this: ROMANCING MEMORY: HAMLET'S SAD MISCONCEPTION OF OPHELIA by Bethany Stibbens

    • 4

Type the name of your class and your professor 4 lines below your own name. These should also each have their own line. Therefore, if your professor's name is Dr. Paula Devon and the class is Beginning Shakespeare, then your title page will now look like this: ROMANCING MEMORY: HAMLET'S SAD MISCONCEPTION OF OPHELIA by Bethany Stibbens Presented to Dr. Paula Devons Beginning Shakespeare

    • 5

Add the name of your university, the city and state where it is located, and the due date of the paper on the following 3 lines. All of this information should fit on one page. If you go to the Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina and your paper is due on February 10, 2008, then your completed title page will look like this: ROMANCING MEMORY: HAMLET'S SAD MISCONCEPTION OF OPHELIA by Bethany Stibbens Presented to Dr. Paula Devons Beginning Shakespeare Furman University Greenville, South Carolina February 10, 2008

Adjust the spacing. Once you have all the information on the page, make sure that your title is about 4 lines from the top. Your name should appear in the center of the page, so you may need to increase the size of the gaps between the words in your title, the word "by" and your name. The rest of the information should be spread out evenly across the bottom of the page.
