How to Cite Work Done by Two Authors in MLA

Academic ethics dictate that you properly credit the authors any time you cite a source in an academic paper. When an entry in the reference list has two authors, the style of the Modern Language Association (MLA) instructs that you give the full names of both authors. Compose the rest of the entry in the same way you would if it had only one author, using the correct format for the type of reference.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the citation with the last name of the first author, then the first name.

    • 2

Use "and," then give the first and last names of the second author. For example, "Smith, Aaron and Brenda Jones."

    • 3

Give the title of the work. Italicize a book title or use quotation marks around the title of a shorter work. Capitalize the first and last words of the title and all other words except articles shorter than four letters. For example, "Citing Two Authors in MLA."

    • 4

Add publication information for the work. For a book, give the publisher's location and name and the date of publication: for example, "New York: Scholastic, 2010."

For a magazine or newspaper, state the periodical's name in italics followed by the date of publication and the page numbers for the article. For example, "Time 10 Jan. 2010: 50-52."

For an academic journal, use the journal name in italics, the volume and issue numbers, the year of publication and the page numbers. For example, "Journal of Sociology 10.2 (2010): 50-55."

For an electronic publication, give the name of the website in italics, the name of the publisher, and the date of publication. For example, "Gmail. Google, 10 Jan. 2011."

    • 5

Indicate the medium of publication for the work and add the date you accessed it for an electronic source. For example, "Print." or "Web. 10 May 2011."
