While there is no industry standard certification in this field, many employers are looking for graduates of trade schools that offer motorcycle technician programs. However, on the job training is still common in this field.
General programs provide hands-on experience in diagnosing motorcycle problems, repairs and performing basic motorcycle service and maintenance tasks. A theory component is also usually included. This type of program provides you with the basic skills to work on almost any motorcycle.
Manufacturer-specific programs cover the same skills as the general programs, but emphasize a certain brand of manufacturer. This kind of program is often required to do warranty and insurance work on major brand name bikes.
Many motorcycle mechanics learn by working as a helper in a repair shop, gradually learning the trade and earning increasing responsibilities. This informal apprenticeship arrangement is the most common.
