What are Company Sponsored Truck Driving Schools?

Requirements for Admission

• Each state's department of motor vehicles has laws in place for issuance of a CDL license. In turn, most schools have admission requirements to ensure candidates are eligible to work once trained. Typically, students must have a valid driver's license, must be 18 or older for in-state driving and 21 or older for out-of-state driving, have no existing arrest warrants, must have no felony or driving under the influence of alcohol convictions in the previous five years and fewer than three moving violations in the previous three years.

Course Length and Topics

• Courses are designed to prepare students to take the state CDL exam and begin working with a commercial truck driving company upon obtaining a license. Topics will include how to read maps, regulations of the Department of Transportation and planning and logging trips. A typical training program is full-time and usually lasts a few weeks to a month.

Associated Expenses

• Most company-sponsored programs will cover the cost of course-related materials and tuition. If the course is not located near your home, you'll likely be responsible for covering your own lodging and food expenses.

The Fine Print

• Company-sponsored CDL training programs are often contingent upon your continued employment with the trucking company that pays for your training. You will likely be required to sign a one-year employment commitment, with a pro-rated repayment rate for your training if you were to leave your position early.
