If you've ever wanted to be the one behind the scenes creating special characters or looks that enhance a movie scene, a career in special effects makeup might just be your calling. Special effects makeup artists are in high demand and have a plethora of opportunities available in television, theater and movie industries. Schools that specialize in special effects (FX) makeup can teach you all aspects of makeup application, character rendering or design and even how to create and utilize prosthetics.
  1. EI School of Professional Makeup

    • EI School of Professional Makeup is located in Hollywood, California and teaches all aspects of professional makeup application with hands-on training. There are various programs offered including SFX, studio makeup, artistry of makeup and master courses. Full-time students can complete the SFX course in about five months, which consists of 600 clock hours (26 credits). The Artistry of Makeup program is a 52-week course which also requires 600 hours (30 credits).

      Both programs prepare students for careers in industries including salon/spa, film and television. Sculpting, drawing techniques and various makeup applications are just a few of the topics students are trained in. Master classes also offer airbrush techniques and mask-making, or students can take refresher courses. Work-study programs and loans are available at EI for help with tuition and costs.

    Joe Blasco Makeup Schools

    • Joe Blasco is a pioneer in the artistry of makeup in the motion picture and TV industry. He was the first in many discoveries regarding special effects makeup that is used today. Joe Blasco Makeup schools are located in Orlando, Florida and Hollywood, California. Both locations offer courses in professional makeup artistry (approximately 20 weeks), beauty makeup artistry (three weeks) and advanced prosthetic makeup (six weeks). Once each course is completed, a diploma or certificate will be awarded for satisfactory completion.

      Students will learn all aspects of makeup basics and other subjects including hair work, character makeup, sculpting and prosthetics. Masters courses are also available for advanced training. Loans and financial assistance are available for tuition and supply costs.

    Cosmix School of Makeup Artistry

    • At Cosmix School, students will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of special effects makeup--from the essentials of makeup application to character design. Courses can be taken individually or through one of three programs--multi-media makeup (160 to 300 hours), fashion makeup (315 hours) and production makeup (490 hours). When the programs are completed, students will be awarded diplomas.

      The production makeup artistry program is the master program that includes all courses of the curriculum and prepares students for careers in motion pictures and TV. Scholarships and financial assistance are available to pay for tuition and supplies. Applications can be downloaded from the school's website or students can apply directly online.
