The Arques School of Traditional Boatbuilding was founded in 1993 with funding provided by Donlon Arques, who wanted to create a place that would restore and replicate historical boats of the San Francisco Bay Area. The school accomplishes this by harvesting its own lumber, using hand tools and avoiding the use of toxic chemicals. At any given time, Arques is involved in several boat projects in different stages of construction.
The Arques School of Traditional Boatbuilding offers classes about celestial navigation, boat building and how to harvest and treat lumber. The school also offers an apprenticeship program for those with woodworking experience. Students in these programs learn about boat design and boat building.

Apprenticeshop offers internships, apprenticeships and workshops. The school's apprenticeship program allows students to work on a boat project from concept to completion. The program, which takes students two years to complete, teaches them everything they need to know to prepare a boat for launch, including how to construct a boat's deck, plank and frame.
Apprenticeshop's internship programs take twelve weeks to complete and are designed for students in academic programs who want to receive hands-on experience in addition to their course work. The school also offers workshops on boat building and sailing for children.

The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding was founded in 1981 by Bob Prothero, a 50-year veteran boat builder. The school allowed him to pass on his knowledge to other people. Students can earn a certificate in boat building in two different programs. The school's traditional large craft diploma, which takes nine months to complete, prepares students for careers at companies such as yacht building companies. In addition, this program can prepare students for related careers like architectural woodworking. The school also offers a similar program that teaches students how to build small boats.
