Fire Science Programs in Minnesota

Several community colleges and vocational schools in Minnesota offer degrees or certificates in Fire Science which prepare candidates for jobs as firefighters. Besides the usual college-level courses in math and science, these programs provide knowledge of fire safety, handling hazardous materials and house or building construction.
  1. Hennepin Technical College

    • Hennepin Technical College is located in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, a northern suburb on Minneapolis/St. Paul. It offers a Fire Protection program which is designed to provide students with certificates in fire protection training and ending with a bachelor of science concentration in fire science. It begins with certificates in fire suppression, hazardous materials, company officer, and fire inspection/investigation. Upon completion of these certificates, students are prepared for basic fire protection duties.

    Lake Superior College

    • Lake Superior College is located on the north shore of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota. It offers a Fire Technology and Administration program. This is a seventy-two credit Associate in Applied Science Degree program which enables students to obtain instruction in fire fighting techniques, rescue, fire prevention and management of fire services. According to the college placement service, 90 percent of graduates of this program have a job upon completion of the program.

    Minnesota State Community Technical College - Moorhead

    • Minnesota State Community Technical College, Moorhead is located along the North Dakota/Minnesota border, across the Red River from Fargo, North Dakota. It offers both a Fire Department Company Officer and Fire Service Preparation programs. The Company Officer program is for people who currently have at least two years of experience as a fireman and wish to advance their career. It is offered through an e-learning program. The Fire Service Preparation certificate program gives individuals the opportunity to learn the fundamentals in firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical care. Upon completion, students will meet the minimum requirements for most fire departments in the United States.
