As of July 2008, Orlando was home to more than 230,000 residents, according to City-Data.com. A center for education as a result of its large population, Orlando is known for Central Florida University, but is home to a number of technical colleges. These private institutions provide training in a number of fields, including computer science and healthcare.
  1. Southern Technical College

    • Southern Technical College operates four locations in Florida, including the Orange County campus in southern Orlando. In its 18,000-square-foot facility, the school offers associate degree programs in medical assisting, medical billing and coding, business office administration and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). The college participates in federal and state financial aid programs and offers a limited number of merit and need-based scholarships. Career placement assistance is available for graduates.

    Florida Technical College

    • The Orlando location of the Florida Technical College is located to the east of downtown. The school opened in 1983 and has associate programs in medical assisting, network administration, electronics and computer technology, business management, computer-aided drafting, medical administration, web design, paralegal studies and criminal justice. Additionally, diplomas are awarded in programming and medical billing and coding. Students take only one course at a time in order to completely focus their energies and attention on the curriculum. The school participates in government financial aid and scholarship programs.

    Audio Recording Technology Institute

    • Located in the southwestern Orlando neighborhood of Lake Richmond, the Audio Recording Technologies Institute is a technical school specifically for careers in recording. The school limits class sizes to only eight students and features high-tech equipment in every single classroom for hands-on experience. Founded in 1973, the institute's programs consist of three units: music Production, sound for television and audio post-production for film. During the course of the program, students create sound effects for video games and serve as the sound editors for films completed by students in the University of Central Florida's Film Program. All students spend 1,500 hours in the program and receive a certificate.

    High-Tech Institute

    • The High-Tech Institute has nine locations nationwide, including its Orlando campus, which is adjacent to Orlando Fashion Square. The school opened in 1998 and offers associate degrees in dental assisting, medical billing and coding and medical assisting as well as diplomas in pharmacy technology, massage therapy and x-ray machine operating.

      All students complete a short internship in their respective fields prior to graduation. The school offers intramural sports and clubs as well as tutoring services and assistance for students with locating part-time jobs while still in school. After graduation, the institute also provides job placement assistance.
