The course of study for a certificate in medical transcription in the Lone Star College system takes one year and requires the completion of 33 credit hours. There is no application required for this program, but students must have taken one year of college-level English courses and one semester of basic college math. Classes include anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology and classes dedicated to the act of medical transcription itself. Students wishing to obtain an Associate of Applied Science degree in medical coding and billing may do so as well. While this program takes two years, students completing this are also qualified to sit for the transcription certification exam and may be able to command a higher starting pay. There are two Lone Star campuses offering the program: Lone Star College -- Kingwood and the North Harris campus.

The program for medical transcription at Houston Community College Southwest requires 26 semester hours of study. Courses within the program follow that of most medical transcription certification programs except that this one has a Spanish conversation course as well. The southwest Houston area has a large Hispanic population. Knowing conversational Spanish enhances chances of obtaining a job in the immediate area. Students also study the production of medical documents and computer applications as well as keyboarding. Another unusual offering of this school is that the entire course of study can be accomplished through online classes. This is important for students who must work while they are obtaining their certificates.
