Students can also enroll in the home study program; students are provided with a book and CD course to complete and return. The online course costs $1,530 plus $35 for shipping and handling with transcriber equipment included. The school offers discounts for students who are struggling financially. Online students must have a Windows 98 or higher computer system, a sound card, USB port and Internet connection. The course length is approximately 300 hours in total: 100 hours of book work and 200 hours of transcription practice. The topics of study include the language of medicine, basic word structure, pronunciation of terms, terms pertaining to the body, suffixes and prefixes, disease process and laboratory values. Students must be at least 18-years-old and able to type at least 45 words per minute.
