    • The Transcription connection is a United States Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship System Sponsor located in Houston. Applicants must be at least 17 (all applicants under 18 must have written permission from their parent or legal guardian) and have a high school diploma or a GED certification and basic computer experience. In addition to basic skill-building classes, students learn medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, surgical procedures, and receive career placement assistance. Once the program is completed, students are eligible to take the Certified Medical Transcriptionist Exam.

    Lonestar College System

    • The medical transcription program requires three semesters and 33 or 43 credits, depending on the medical transcription certificate you want. Classes include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and microcomputer applications. Students have the option of obtaining an Associate of Applied Science degree in medical billing and coding -- a two-year program.

TechSkills, a career-training institutem, offers a 10-month medical transcription program that prepares students for the Registered Medical Transcriptionist exam. Students who pass the exam are eligible to earn certification from the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity. TechSkills teaches students how to accurately handle documentation, spell and define medical terms, adhere to state and federal regulations, and follow proper office etiquette. Classes are led by an instructor, but supplemented with online learning activities.

    Houston Community College Southwest

    • Houston Community College Southwest is one of a series of Houston community colleges that offers medical transcription classes. Unlike most medical transcription schools, this college teaches conversational Spanish to increase students' chances of obtaining a job in the Houston area, which boasts a large Hispanic population. Students are taught computer applications, keyboarding and how to produce proper medical documents. Classes can be taken completely online, if necessary.
