The University of Texas Medical School in Houston was created by an act of the Texas Legislature in 1969 and enrolled its first class in 1970. Since that time, the school has granted degrees to over 5,000 students. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of medicine has four campuses in West Texas to better serve the people of the region. Since it opened in 1969, the school has trained over 3,000 physicians. Requirements for admission include 90 hours of undergraduate coursework, an undergraduate degree (although an exceptional student can be admitted without one), and a Medical College Admissions Test. Residents of Texas are given preference.
