The Biggest Med Schools

There are 134 medical schools in the United States, and they range in size from fewer than 50 students all the way up to 1,400-plus students. Those numbers include students in one of four years of medical training. The biggest five medical schools are found in four urban areas that boast populations large enough to provide the necessary patient volume for such an extensive medical education system.

    • The University of Illinois College of Medicine has long been one of the largest medical schools in the United States. It topped the chart in 2010 with a total active enrollment of 1,409 students. In 2009, the medical school received 6,740 applications, and for that same year, 328 students graduated from the program.

    Indiana University School of Medicine

    • Located in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Indiana University School of Medicine ranked number two in 2010 for the largest medical school. It boasted a total enrollment of 1,300 students. In 2009, the medical school received 3,598 applications, and it produced a graduating class of 262 students.

    Wayne State University School of Medicine

    • Wayne State University School of Medicine is located in Detroit, Michigan, and it fell from number two to number three for the largest medical school in 2010. It was bumped by Indiana University School of Medicine. In the 2010 calendar year, Wayne State University School of Medicine enrolled 1,270 students. In 2009, it received 3,809 applications and graduated 273 students.

    Drexel University College of Medicine

    • Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ranks number four in the list of the biggest medical schools. In 2010, it had a total active enrollment of 1,112 students, and in 2009, it received an amazing 12,151 applications and graduated 260 students. However, this popular university is not the only large medical school in the area.

    Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University

    • Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University is the second largest medical school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and it enrolled 1,094 students in 2010. It received 9,713 applications in 2009 and graduated 243 students that same year.
