Hillsborough County Technical Schools

Hillsborough County is located in southwest Florida, about an hour west of Orlando and is a part of the greater Tampa Bay area which includes St Petersberg and Clearwater FL (which is Pinellas County). Hillsborough County consists of the city of Tampa and surrounding areas and all of the technical schools in Hillsborough County are easily accessible via Interstates 75, 275 and 4.
  1. Erwin Technical Center

    • Erwin Technical Center is located just north of downtown Tampa on East Hillsborough Avenue. Erwin offers day and evening course schedules for business, health, design and industrial careers. Training programs offered by Erwin Technical Center include barbering, automotive technology (mechanic), medical assisting, cosmetology and culinary arts. The length of the training depends on the program, but generally they last between 9-19 months.

      For admission into a program completion of an entrance exam is required. This test measures basic skills in reading, math, and English language. Although passing the test is not a requirement, low scores in a particular area may imply the applicant will have to take prep/remedial courses too get up to speed with the learning requirements of a program. To enroll, the applicant must pay a $3 test fee and a $10 non-refundable application fee. Tuition as of February 2010 for in-state students is $981.00 per semester and $3919.50 per semester for out-of-state students.

    ITT Technical Institute

    • ITT Technical Institute is located in west Tampa near Tampa International Airport. ITT offers Master's, Bachelors, and Associate degree programs in the daytime, evenings and online. The programs fall under one of six categories: information technology, electronics technology, drafting and design, business, criminal justice, and health sciences. Multiple programs are offered under each category from which to choose. ITT accepts U.S. and international students. To be accepted, you must have a high school diploma or GED, pass an entrance exam or have scored at least a 17 on the ACT; or 400 on the verbal and math section of the SAT; or completed 36 college credit hours with at least a 2.0 GPA. International students must: fill out an international student application, have proof of high school graduation, able to speak and understand English, and sign and enrollment and financial agreement.

      Tuition as of March 2011 tuition will increase to $518 per credit hour. Fees you can expect to pay include a one-time $200 academic fee that every student must pay and up to $500 for tools and supplies.

    Brewster Technical School

    • Brewster Technical School is located in the downtown area of Tampa. Brewster offers programs in business, industry (mechanical), health, and computers. They also offer GED, ESOL, ABE, and disability classes. Only some of the programs are offered at night and online but all programs that are offered are available in the daytime. Applicants must first take a free admissions test to determine eligibility. It is not specified if you must pass or if there is a passing grade for the test. After the admissions test, applicants are assigned to a program advisor/counselor and an orientation/registration session is scheduled before the student's enrollment date. Tuition costs range from $300-$7400 for the entire program.
