Information on Technical Schools

Technical schools are different from traditional universities. At a technical school, students work toward obtaining a degree or certification in a much narrower study focus. Technical schools work to provide students with marketable skills they can use in their careers within a short period of time. Technical schools offer a variety of degrees and study plans to provide business skills in nearly every imaginable career path.
  1. Types

    • There are several different types of technical schools. Some technical schools are two-year degree programs; others offer technical programs that are skill-based and non-accredited; and some schools offer technical degrees in programs that take three or more years to complete. There are technical schools in nearly every field of study, but there are few technical schools that offer generalized degrees. Look for a traditional four-year school or community college for a general degree.

    Programs

    • A wide range of programs are available at technical schools across the United States. Some of the most prevalent programs include nursing, computer engineering, design, art, criminal justice, electrical engineering, the culinary arts, mechanical engineering and agriculture. You can find a technical program on almost any topic. The goal of most technical-school programs is to have a marketable skill by the time you get your degree.

    Non-Accredited Technical Schools

    • Non-accredited technical schools provide students with certifications and licensing at the end of the programs, but the schools are unable to provide enough subjects or teaching to qualify as an accredited education. Many career fields will accept certifications and licenses from non-accredited programs, and some accredited schools will count the courses as part of an accredited degree program, but not all will.

    Choosing a School

    • Choosing a technical school can be a difficult process because there are thousands of choices. The easiest way to find a school that is compatible with what you want to do and learn is to first identify the program that you want to complete. From there, you can search for top-rated technical schools in that area of study, and you can look for local schools that offer those programs. Take your time when researching school options to find your best match.
