German Architecture Schools

Germany has a substantial and dynamic history when it comes to architecture; for example, in the early 20th century, the heavily influential and socially-oriented ‘Bauhaus’ school arose in the country, leading to an architectural renewal across Germany. German architectural schools, then, have built upon these traditions and continue to explore the teachings of the German architects of the past in the modern day programs of architecture they offer.
  1. Brandenburg University of Technology

    • Although founded in the late 1980s around the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall, this institution has already come to specialize in several areas, among them architecture, and offers bachelor of science degree programs in the field. The University aims to provide students with the skills to attain employment in top architectural firms, with student’s ideas being used in cooperation with professional architects as part of projects. The architecture program aims to promote a student’s sense of the ‘whole’ of the architecture industry, teaching would-be architects how to be responsible for our environment. Coursework includes architectural planning, theory and conservation.

    Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

    • This institution offers both bachelor of science and master of science courses in architecture. The University’s programs tend to focus on design, with the academic and theory side of architecture being taught in classes that form a background to a student’s primary study. In order to enroll in a course, students must pass an aptitude test, which will examine factors such as spatial awareness and technical ability. Upon graduation, a student receives a well-recognized degree which may lead them to entry-level employment as an architect or perhaps to further study.

The university itself focuses on practical subjects such as engineering, building upon the framework laid down by the German ‘Bauhaus’ movement. Thus, the University aims to be open and inventive, looking to create public spaces and plan the human habitats of the future.

    Berlin University of Arts

    • This institution focuses on the creative arts, and as such, integrates the study of creative methods into its architecture course, viewing architecture more as an ‘art’ than a ‘science’. Students are encouraged to be experimental when it comes to their practical work and to study art subjects within their architecture course. The course structure contains the study of both the theory behind architecture, as well as the exploration of image and space. In addition, students learn about urban planning, along with examining architecture in the context of society. Students who complete the University’s architecture course have the option of undertaking a doctorate in engineering.

The Berlin University of Arts is one of Germany’s few art colleges to have attained university status, and is also one of the largest arts institutions worldwide.
