Mid Florida Tech is located in Orlando. (See reference 2) Their Diesel Technology program requires 1,350 hours of study, either in the classroom or in hands-on training. The program focuses on the maintenance and repair of diesel systems including the engine and electrical systems and the hydraulic system. Students also learn how to overhaul a diesel engine and perform basic maintenance. The school is certified by the National Automotive Technicians Educational Foundation. (See reference 3)
Located in Starke, Florida, the Bradford-Union Area Career Technical Center is about 135 miles from Orlando. (See reference 4) Their Truck and Bus Mechanics program includes 1,800 hours of class and hands-on time. Students learn how to troubleshoot repair systems, maintain and repair steering, brake, electrical, suspension and drive train systems and perform preventative engine maintenance. (See reference 5)
About 175 miles south of Orlando lies Lake Worth, Florida, home of the Lake Worth campus of Palm Beach State College. (See reference 6) Two diesel technology programs are available at Palm Beach State College: Diesel Technology 1 and Diesel Technology 2. The first program involves 1,050 hours of study and can be completed in one year. Classes cover engine, brake and electrical systems. (See reference 7) Diesel Technology 2 students must complete Diesel Technology 1 prior to taking classes. The level 2 program requires 750 hours and may be completed in eight months. Classes cover preventative maintenance and other diesel vehicle systems including hydraulics and drive trains. (See reference 8)
Miami Lakes Educational Center is located in Miami Lakes, Florida, about 230 miles south of Orlando. The Heavy Duty Trucks and Bus Mechanics program is one of their Adult Vocational education programs. The course consists of 1,800 hours and can be completed in two years.
