Massachusetts Institute of Technology or MIT, as it is popularly known, opened in 1865. CIT offers an integrated five-year program in engineering and technology along with an accelerated master's course in Engineering & Technology Innovation Management. The Yale School of Engineering & Applied Science opened in 1852. There are four major departments in in the school: biomedical engineering, chemical and environmental engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering and materials science. The school is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, and all the four departments offer graduate and undergraduate programs and research opportunities to its students.
The California Institute of Technology or Caltech opened in 1891 with 31 students and six faculty members. Caltech ranked as a top engineering school in the "U.S. News and World Report" rankings in 2010. Caltech is located at Pasadena, California, and spreads over 124 acres of land. The institute has six academic divisions: chemistry and chemical engineering, biology, engineering and applied science, humanities and social sciences, geological and planetary sciences, physics, astronomy and mathematics. Caltech has good research facilities for its students, including the Beckman Institute, Infrared Processing and Analysis Center, Spitzer Science Center and Center for Advanced Computing Research.
