Art Programs in Israel

Although Israel is a relatively young nation, founded in 1947 by the United Nations (along with Palestine), Israeli culture and history is thousands of years old. The art and architecture of the region is characterized by the many nations and cultures who have occupied the area over the centuries. Studying art in Israel thus offers much to the young artist, and there are several programs that support young artists studying in the country.
  1. Bezalel Program

    • The Bezalel College of Art and Design offers an art and design program in Jerusalem to English-speaking Jewish students between the ages of 18 and 30. The program includes art classes at Rimon, language courses, educational seminars, volunteering opportunities and frequent trips around Israel. Bezalel has a semester-long program and a year-long program. The semester-long program costs $11,000 (U.S., in 2010) while the year-long costs $18,000. The program cost covers tuition fees, Hebrew studies and lodging, as well as seminars, trips and cultural events.

    WUJS Arts

    • The WUJS Jerusalem Arts program allows its students to combine studies in the Hebrew language and Israeli art with their own artistic vision and inspirations from the city of Jerusalem. WUJS prides itself on a holistic and open-minded approach and provides its students with classroom time, weekly field trips, overnight hikes, volunteer opportunities and meetings with Israeli artists. At the end of the program, artists present their work in a group exhibition at the Hadassah Art Gallery.

Applicants to the WUJS program should be Jewish university graduates between the ages of 21 and 35. The program lasts for five months and costs $7,600, which covers accommodation, tuition fees and additional expenses. Further information and application guidelines can be found at:

    Saving the Stones

    • Saving the Stones in Old Acre, a World Heritage site, provides an opportunity for students to engage deeply with Israeli architectural history. Saving the Stones offers practical training in archaeology and historic preservation, and features workshops, lectures and study tours where students learn about historic cultures and religious movements that left an architectural stamp in Israel.
