MIddlebury College is in Middlebury, Vermont. Founded in 1965, this school's environmental studies program is the oldest undergraduate program of its type in the United States. Environmental policy is one of 13 specialty discipline options available for students. Two-thirds of all students enrolled in this program spend a semester abroad in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America or Australia. Middlebury alumni have gone on to become entrepreneurs, scientists, policy makers, scholars, consultants, teachers, volunteers, activists and non-profit organization founders. Treehugger, a website dedicated to environmental issues, placed MIddlebury in its list, "10 of the Best College Environmental Programs in the U.S."

Duke University's Environmental Policy program is a researched-based five-year doctorate curriculum. This program prepares its graduates for careers in environment and natural resources, domestic and international public and environmental organizations, research institutes and policy consulting firms. Duke's program is the first and only U.S. doctoral program administered jointly by a school of the environment and a school of public policy. Completion of the program requires a minimum of 40 course hours, which is approximately 13 three-credit hour courses, as well as regular participation in research seminars, passing a final examination and defense of dissertation.
