About Pre-Pharmacy

There are many routes to becoming a pharmacist, but the road is paved with many of the same core of classes. All programs require a foundation in biological and physical science along with general education coursework. A high grade-point average, an acquaintance with a pharmacist in the area, and a clear mission statement are all essential.
  1. Coursework

    • Biology coursework is essential for the pre-pharmacy student.

According to a white paper on pharmacy school prerequisite curriculum featured on the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy website, nearly all programs require undergraduate coursework in biology, including cellular biology and/or microbiology; chemistry, including organic chemistry; English composition; and calculus.

    Who You Know

    • Letters of recommendation should be gathered along the way.

Not only are letters of recommendation required from professors, but often programs-- the University of the Pacific for one--require a recommendation from a licensed pharmacist. Many pharmacist are responsive to students interested in the profession.

    Personal Essay and Interview

    • Interviews are typical in the pre-pharmacy process.

Many schools take into account the personality of the student. Programs often require a personal statement and essay as part of the application process. Once the initial process is completed, the student will often be asked in for an interview in order for the school to complete the selection process.
