The significance of team spirit is found in the team-building activities the team does as a whole. Team spirit is something that is not easy to create; it has to be honed within its members. It stems from a common interest, whether it be winning a game or showcasing the skills of team.
There are different types of team spirit. One type is the connection between a team of players because their efforts and cooperation are essential in winning a particular game. Another type is when a group of people supports an individual or a team. Another is nationalistic in nature, when a whole nation roots for a representative of its country in competitions. Team spirit can also manifest itself in the workplace--whether it's to get a tough job done, to be constantly supportive of one another, or to take up the slack for others. Team spirit can also show during a particular project in the community or charitable endeavor.
There are various positive effects team spirit creates. It creates camaraderie between people who may not otherwise get along. Team spirit involves sharing a common passion for something greater than the individual. There may also be negative effects, which can be seen in extreme team spirit such as arguments about loyalty and violent reactions toward other team members.
Many people think team spirit involves having to become an official member of a particular organization, team or fan club. In reality, team spirit can be built anywhere--between friends, coworkers or even between two people sitting next to each other. You don't have to be wearing the team spirit attire or learn how to do cartwheels. Anyone can show team spirit just by showing support for the goal.
Activities in team building strengthen team spirit. When a team shares a strong sense of team spirit, it becomes more effective, because working with each other becomes easier. Members of high-performing teams assist each other toward shared goals or values much more effectively. Potential activities include meeting outside of sporting events, sharing meals together or helping each other build tokens of support such as posters, flags and other team merchandise.
