How to Go to College While You're Pregnant

Attending college while you are pregnant is a difficult endeavor, yet is a worthy pursuit for you and your child's future. A study conducted at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University found that between 12 and 23 percent of college students have either experienced or been involved in an unplanned pregnancy. Although pregnancy brings about challenges for the average college student, expectant mothers can still successfully pursue degrees.

Apply for financial aid from the government by filling out and mailing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA form. You can submit this form electronically by visiting fafsa.ed.gov. You may be eligible for receiving financial assistance because of your pregnancy, and may receive even more assistance after your baby is born.

    • 2

Register for classes according to the amount of rest you need during your pregnancy. Keep in mind factors like morning sickness, nausea, fatigue, naps, and the number of hours of rest you need a day when making your schedule. For example, if you experience morning sickness, do not register for classes early in the morning that you may have to skip.

    • 3

Communicate with your professors concerning your pregnancy and any specific needs you have. These include necessary bathroom breaks during class, eating and drinking during class, and any homework extensions you may need in the event of sickness. Also communicate your due date to your professor in the event you have your baby in the middle of the term. This will make your professor aware of your reasoning for any extended absences.

Get the amount of rest that you need while still being diligent in your studies. Be aware of your body and the amount of rest that you need during your pregnancy, and be careful to not unnecessarily stress yourself over school work. Find the proper balance. Although you need ample rest during this time, you still need to stay diligent in your school work to successfully learn and finish the course in time for your baby to arrive. Remember that your opportunities to take classes and invest in your schoolwork will lessen once you have your baby.
