Colleges Near Bremen, Georgia

Located in Haralson County and incorporated in 1883, the town of Bremen in northwest Georgia received its name to honor the city of Bremen, Germany. Bremen has public schools, but no colleges are located in this town. Graduates and adults eager to attend college can travel less than 30 minutes to attend a Georgia university or technical college, however. Students who do not wish to experience a traditional college setting may choose to take college courses online.

    • Students can participate in golf while in UWG.

      Located in Carrollton, Georgia, a 23-minute drive from Bremen, the University of West Georgia (UWG) offers 116 programs of study including 59 bachelor degrees, 42 masters and specialist degrees, three doctorate degrees and 12 college certificates. As of fall 2010, tuition per semester costs $2,298 and part-time freshmen pay $154 dollars per credit hour. Students have the option of living in one of the 10 residence halls available at UWG. Sports activities at UWG include men's baseball, basketball, cross-country, football and golf. Women can participate in basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, volleyball and tennis.

    West Georgia Technical College

    • Students can learn commercial truck driving at WGTC.

      In 2008, when 14 statewide technical colleges consolidated into six, West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) became the second largest technical college in Georgia. Located 11 minutes from Bremen, in Carrollton, Georgia, WGTC boasts 140 approved programs of study. Students can choose from 31 academic majors, 16 associate of applied sciences degrees, 31 diploma programs and 62 certificate programs. As of 2011, tuition fees cost $45 per credit hour for diploma and degree programs and certificate fees vary, depending on the course. Tuition for the commercial truck driving program runs $292 per credit hour, and basic and intermediate EMT class fees cost $83 per credit hour. Athletic programs available at WGTC include men and women's basketball, cheerleading and women's volleyball.

    Online Courses

    • Students can take online courses from Georgia colleges.

      For students who prefer online learning, UWG and WGTC offer online courses. The eCore courses at UWG allow students to complete much of their first two years of undergraduate degrees and some graduate courses online.

      At WGTC, over 50 courses are available along with general education courses online through the Georgia Virtual Technical College (GVTC).

      Expectations for students participating in online courses include assignment due date completion, proof of attendance by logging into the course and online discussion participation.

    Prerequisites

    • A high school diploma or GED is required for college acceptance.

      Applicants at UWG must submit official high school transcripts, SAT or ACT scores. For acceptance, UWG requires a SAT verbal score of 430 or an ACT English score of 17 and a SAT math score of 410 or an ACT math score of 17. Applicants must meet college prep high school diploma requirements and all 16 requisite units of college preparatory curriculum.

      Students applying at WGTC must submit a GED or high school diploma and transcripts from other colleges if applicable. College transcripts must meet a minimum of 45 credit hours or 30 semester hours with a C or better grade average. Students must meet minimum placement testing prerequisites by submitting recent SAT, ACT, ASSET or COMPASS test results for review.
