Doctoral programs in psychology prepare students to work either as counselors in research related fields, as educators or in clinical psychology at a medical facility. Candidates with a Ph.d in psychology are eligible to become licensed clinical psychologists or counselors. Most Ph.d. programs in psychology are accredited by the American Psychological Association; it takes approximately six to seven years of coursework and independent research to complete the program.
