The changing work climate and the need for late-career job security led to a 25 to 40 percent increase in 2009 applications to some of the nation's best Ph.D. programs, according to a report by Bloomberg Businessweek. A Ph.D. from a prestigious program increases job prospects and chances of securing a high-paying faculty position. Certain schools consistently rank in the top 10 lists of the "Financial Times," "Princeton Review" and "U.S. News & World Report" best business schools.

    • The Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago, the nation's first business Ph.D. has approximately 100 students in residence. The program helps students develop their innovation, research skill and prepare for work in top academic institutions worldwide. The flexible full-time program takes approximately five years to complete from the start of academic studies to defending a dissertation. Students will select a dissertation discipline in accounting, econometrics and statistics, economics, finance, management science/operations management, managerial and organizational behavior, marketing or organizations and markets. Classroom instruction, close research assistance from professors and informative seminars, brown bag lunch sessions and workshops complement the student's research. Notable alumni of the school have gone on to become CEOs of Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch.
